The cover art (photographed by Anton Corbijn), sleeve (designed by Steve Averill), and B-sides (" Bullet the Blue Sky" and " Running to Stand Still") were identical to those used for U2's 1988 single " One Tree Hill," released only in New Zealand and Australia. "In God's Country" was released as a single in Canada and the United States in November 1987. The first chorus repeats an Em–G–D chord progression while the second chorus repeats a C–G–D progression. Played in the key of D, the verses of the studio version alternates between D and A minor chords. Along with " Where the Streets Have No Name," the lyrics and sound of "In God's Country" reference the desert in accordance with the band's wish for The Joshua Tree to have a "cinematic" sense of location. The lyric speaks of a lack of political ideas in the West which Bono later contrasted to the revolution in Nicaragua where he had travelled during the recording of The Joshua Tree. ![]() The song characterises the United States as a " desert rose" and a siren whose dress is torn in "ribbons and bows," a depiction both "sad and seductive". īono has stated that he originally didn't know whether the song was about Ireland or the United States, but eventually dedicated it to the Statue of Liberty. ![]() Lanois said, "What was a fairly straightforward rock track is now undermined by a mood of unrest", which inspired lead vocalist Bono to change his lyrics to give them more dimension. In producing the song, he used a collection of channels in the mixing console designated as sound treatments to adjust the tone of the Edge's guitar to give it a "beautiful shimmer", which he thought contributed to the song's mood. ![]() Despite the location, he said the recording worked because of the "spontaneity and lack of pressure", which contributed to a good take, a quality Lanois favours to overplanning the recording setup. "In God's Country" was recorded in the basement of the Edge's house, which producer Daniel Lanois called a "muggy little room where everything sounds dead" and "not a particularly inspiring place". Of the song, Bono said " lyric was really good, the tune is pretty good, and the hook is pretty average - thanks to the Edge." Bono tried to inspire the Edge by teasing and playing on his competitive instincts by claiming to be a better guitarist. It was developed out of Bono's frustration at trying to get "a bit of rock 'n' roll out of the Edge". During The Joshua Tree sessions, they knew it was not going be one of their best songs but they needed more uptempo songs. "In God's Country" was a difficult song for the band to record, which they attributed to not being trained musicians, and they do not speak very highly of it. There are mods for this and many more (I just listed the most critical ones). * select starting perks - Tinker Everywhere for easier experimentation, etc. Permadeath is great for experts who know what they are doing, but for more experimental/casual play it might be fun to turn it off. * disable permadeath - Noita has runs taking few hours, and there are ways to suddenly lose even if you are very powerful. * larger inventory - I hate limited inventories in general, and in Noita it is exceptionally small (just 4 wands, 4 items, and not too many spells), so you either avoid experimentation or spend extra time to get to your stash. So far I have won unmodded Noita twice, but I am planning to enable mods for further play (and I think new players should consider that too). Luckily, there are mods addressing most of my concerns. Also some aspects of the design make it harder to improvize/experiment, while experimentation is one of the best thing about Noita (and also roguelikes in general). It seems Noita seems to take more from the older, more grindy designs. Modern roguelikes tend to feature "anti-grind" design, the best described in the Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup design philosophy: the optimal way to play the game should be also the most fun. And it feels closer to roguelikes in the traditional sense than most games commonly called roguelikes (arcade games with short runs).īut my concerns about long play time turned out to be valid too. The game is indeed amazing - other than the "falling sand" aspect, the system of building wands is also very interesting. Noita combines all of these, so when I have heard about it, I knew right away that I had to play it to see what is possible in the modern times! Although I read that it takes about 100 hours to complete, so I had to wait until I had time. In the mid-90s I have been working on a falling sand real-time artillery game myself, but unfortunately lost a bit of progress at some point (and switched to making roguelikes with complex magic systems). So I have lots of appreciation for falling sand/real-time artillery games, roguelikes, "magic programming", and Finnish games. ![]() ![]() Wilson said residents are reluctant to speak up, fearing they will be kicked out and unable to find anywhere else they can afford to live. Reviewers concluded that (especially PCM) digital sounded terrible. It’s a vicious cycle which has lead generations of consumers on a never-ending upgrade path. Plugging in new cables can sound better because they are clean and break through the very thin film, of contamination, oxidation or finger oils. An untreated/protected contact will deteriorate over time. Most reviewers over the decades are actually hearing diode effects of unoptimized electrical contacts. Because of the clean and stable contacts I've made more fine-tuning progress than ever before.īut first here is a hilarious, ironic or sad finding depending on ones perspective: I'm observing the best and most consistent audio and visual fidelity ever. It's now been several weeks since I’ve cleaned and protected every electrical contact: HDMI, A/C power, speakers, XLR, TRS and RCA pin in my system. Note: I'm not recommending anything here: just sharing my experience. I noticed an improvement in picture fidelity over a three day period as the lubricant slowly evaporated. In the end I treated every electrical connection. I kept the cables unplugged on for a few minutes and then connected them to avoid reintroducing new contamination. It's easy to use too much of the 2-26 but it has a very benign composition. I wait ~3 minutes then use the 2-26 lubricant (which seals and improves electrical properties.) It not that bad but better to be safe as it is flammable. I turn power off, and then open the doors for the contact cleaner squirts. Both CRC products are sold at Home Depot. I successfully used QD Contact Cleaner followed by 2-26. So what is safe to gently clean but not destroy? Not really as dust and very thin coats of oxidation are all too easy to contaminate. My screen had a slight yellow bias and did not look good at high brightness levels (30-40ft-l).īut usually it's best to leave well-enough alone? (Especially for the tiny HDMI connectors). In a second case cleaning my HDMI connectors resulting in an improvement in my picture quality. So who stores cables with the ends exposed or throws them on the carpet? It was either a loose connection or oxidation. In a recent case I moved the XLR audio connectors around (with gain up and no-signal) and could hear a crackling noise. Over the years I've been a proponent of keeping metal contacts clean as debris and oxidation can degrade sound and picture quality. ![]() ![]() After the attraction closed on January 2, 1996, everything inside the ride building was removed.
